New Divide

Linkin Park always have an innovative concept in their lyrics and music. Their soundtrack “New Divide” took my breath away thinking of Artificially Intelligent Robots. The lyrics go like this:

I remembered black skies

The lightning all around me

I remembered each flash

As time began to blur

Like a startling sign

That fate had finally found me

And your voice was all I heard

That I get what I deserve

So give me reason

To prove me wrong

To wash this memory clean

Let the floods cross

The distance in your eyes

Give me reason

To fill this hole

Connect the space between

Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies

Across this new divide

There was nothing in sight

But memories left abandoned

There was nowhere to hide

The ashes fell like snow

And the ground caved in

Between where we were standing

And your voice was all I heard

That I get what I deserve

So give me reason

To prove me wrong

To wash this memory clean

Let the floods cross

The distance in your eyes

Across this new divide

In every loss in every lie

In every truth that you’d deny

And each regret and each goodbye

Was a mistake too great to hide

And your voice was all I heard

That I get what I deserve

So give me reason

To prove me wrong

To wash this memory clean

Let the floods cross

The distance in your eyes

Give me reason

To fill this hole

Connect the space between

Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies

Across this new divide !

Interpretation

This is a personal interpretation.

This poem digs into the very unique perspective of Artificial Consciousness. There is an AI (Artificial Intelligent) Robot that goes into a war sent by its Master that can be a human or an other AI Robot. After the war is over, the AI Robot, due to its Artificial Consciousness, starts regretting the divide created between it and its Master. All it wants from its master is the truth that has been kept far beyond its reach. This is a piece of self realization of a Robotic Soldier.

AI is being implemented at such a drastic pace these days that these kind of robots are coming out of books. It is very much interesting though it is challenging as well. Things can go worst if the AI is not developed with consciousness. There have to be thresholds, stability criteria, error bands, dampers and the list goes on. AI has no limits theoretically as well as practically. In a sense, one can say that AI will be the first species created by another species called Homo Sapiens Sapiens.

This wonderful realization about AI has come from Linkin Park, so I am grateful to them and here is a write up thanking them:

Today I completed 15 years of starting to listen to and understand the deep Rock-tuned poetry of Linkin Park, the band that helped me getting myself back again. Linkin Park started the punch by expressing the human frustration with ‘Hybrid Theory’ and ‘Meteora’, they became concerned about the world in ‘Minutes to Midnight’, then they applied their matured thought process for modern warfare in ‘A Thousand Suns’ and they implemented their humanity in ‘Living Things’, they were loud again in “Hunting Party” and finally, they lost their voice after Chester stopped playing his battle symphony ! Being a hardcore Linkin Park fan, I burst into tears after loosing Chester but I can say proudly that I am what I am today because of the major contributions of Linkin Park. Mike, Chester, Rob, Pheonix, Joe and Brad have formulated the reconfigurable ‘Hexacopter’ called Linkin Park ! The “Post Traumatic” by Mike healed me up to some extent, still, absence of Chester’s physical presence has created a void deep down inside.

Rock on, LP !”
